THE UNITED STATES SHINES! 23 Jan 2023 13:12
Moutonshoek’s exciting resident stallion The United States had an
excellent weekened. Not only did the stallion’s son Billy Bowlegs win
Sunday’s G3 Sea Cottage Stakes at Turffontein, another promising
three-year-old son of The United States, Without Question, finished a
close up second in Saturday’s G3 Politician Stakes.
Yet another three-year-old by The United States, the classy Khaya’s
Hope, also caught the eye over the weekend, with that gelding romping
home to a brilliant score in Friday’s Sophomore Plate at Fairview.
A game winner of his previous start, the Alec Laird trained Billy
Bowlegs stamped his classic claims when running out a convincing half
length winner of the 2023 Sea Cottage Stakes (1800m).
Under Muzi Yeni, Billy Bowlegs stormed home from off the pace to stay and score a shade cosily in Sunday’s graded feature.
Bred by Wicklow Stud, the colt, who is out of the Captain Al mare
Yourethetops, has now won three of seven starts and he is unbeaten in
two starts over 1800 metres.
His G1 Ranvet Stakes winning sire The United States also enjoyed a big
day at Kenilworth the previous day where not only was The United States
responsible for a pair of winners but The United States son Without
Question stamped his Derby claims when finishing a smart second in
Saturday’s feature, the G3 Politician Stakes.
Bred by Cheveley Stud, the Justin Snaith trained Without Question ran on
strongly to finish just half a length behind his well backed stablemate
Rockpool, and he looks potentially a high-class performer in his own
right.
The United States is also responsible for star East Cape galloper
Khaya’s Hope, who made it three wins in a row when storming home to
claim the Sophomore Plate by two lengths.
Winner of the Listed Racehorse Owners Association Stakes last time out,
the Gavin Smith trained Khaya’s Hope has now won or finished in each of
his ten starts for owner-breeder Khaya Stables.
His sire The United States has a cracking crop of three-year-olds this
season, with the son of Galileo’s sophomores including G2 Jonsson
Workwear Dingaans third East Coast, the promising Tyrconnell and G2 Epol
Umkhomazi Stakes runner up Sun Blushed.
